Marcoliani socks are the result of an almost extreme search for quality. Their production is based on the innovative interaction between craftsmanship and high-tech. Di Bianco | Salt Lake City, Utah

The Scarpe di Bianco men's footwear collection offers classic shoes with contemporary twists. The combination of everlasting models with fashionable colors, and updated designing with traditional details, leads to decidedly current yet elegant models. The goal of the company is to offer men a custom experience through a multitude of models, lasts, soles, leathers, and color options.

Scarpe di Bianco uses the premium materials and handmade workmanship to produce Norwegian and Goodyear welted Bench made shoes. The extreme importance in detail is prominent in the rich colors and burnishes applied to the finished calf skins. The production is highly artisanal in nature witnessed by the fact that no more than 25 pairs are produced per day.

Di Bianco only uses True Grain leather which is the highest rank of leather that requires no alterations. Their skins come from France and are selected from the utmost quality lots. The skins are tanned using the chrome tanning technique which results in softer and suppler leather that is very firm and more long-lasting than vegetable tanned leather.

Di Bianco tricks all the leathers and linings by hand whereby we select the best place on the skins for cutting the leather pieces that will eventually form the upper. This results in a greater amount of consumption of leather per pair but guarantees that the upper is of the complete best quality and appearance.

The upper is made and sewn entirely by hand. Di Bianco includes a comfortable toe liner as well as double lining inside the heel counters.

Raw leather soles and heels are trimmed and beveled to reach the ideal lines and thickness as demanded by each customer. The leather is buffed and colored using non-toxic pigments. Metal tacks are used to support the toe and heels and to provide an elegant finish.

Di Bianco uses the optimum polishes and colorants available in their hand polishing process. They even hand polishes black calfskin. The burnishing of Di Bianco shoes is a very long and intensive procedure that often requires the use of plentiful colors in combination to achieve the final color. Di Bianco employs champagne to enhance the burnishing effect. Several colors offered are “Based on Black” whereby the shoe begins as black calfskin but through the removal of some of the pigmentation and the hand application of additional colors the end result is a smoky multi-layered finish.

At Utah Woolen Mills, we are excited to announce that we are now carrying Di Bianco shoes! Come in and check out the nice selection that we have to offer right downtown Salt Lake City.

Italian Suits | Salt Lake City, Utah

Italian Suit Styles

When you walk in streets of Italy, you might be surprised about their outstanding taste and style and wonder if it’s inherent. In fact, fashion could be learned! Today, I’d like to tell you some basic information about Italian suit styles.

Since 12th century, there are four areas (Milan, Firenze, Roma, and Napoli) that have been well-known by their textiles and leather goods. The tradition makes Italy be a multi-centered and multi-school fashionable empire. There are three main categories of Italian suits distinguished by different cuts and fabrication processes.

The first one is the school of Milano, and it’s close to British style. There’s a constant slope at shoulder area, and they use slice shoulder pad. Full lining on bust area, softly tailored at waist part, mostly single breasted with two buttons, two vents. There’s usually one dart in pants. In general, the outline of Milano is smooth and round.

The second one it the school of Rome, and it is separated into two styles: Italian-Roma and Soft-Roma. The former one is special in clean and simple line. There’s no dart on the suit, and it’s perfectly fit as well as comfortable. The latter one is apparently soft, dent shoulder plus slightly cocked design. Moreover, the draped cut on bust area increase the scholarly look.

The last but not least one is the school of Naples, and it’s a modified version of British draped suits. The most famous feature is their “Neapolitan Shoulder”. The line in shoulder part is very mellow and full, usually no shoulder pads or extremely thin one. The position of lapel is high, and it’s width roughly over half of chest. They leave some space at waist, and upper the waist dart. Often two vents at in height. There’s dart in pants and ham at bottom of trousers.

Come to Utah Woolen Mills and recognize some fantastic Italian suits Brands in Salt Lake City.

Kiton | Salt Lake City, Utah

Kiton is the top men suits brand that was founded in Naples, Italy in 1968 by Cior Paone. Their principle is “The Best of The Best +1”. As a result, they keep fine tradition of handmade, but also they continuously breakthrough the limit of bespoke. As an integral of Italian charming, elegance, and exquisite craftsmanship, Kiton is called the Ferrari of fashion world.

The first step to make a perfect suit is to invent a fabric that satisfies our customers’ innermost desire, and be able to reflect their characteristics. They create fabrics from raw materials from their own woolen mill, Lanificio Carlo Barbera. Also, they always buy out many rarest textiles such as 11.9, 12.9 and 14.0 micrometer diameter textiles, and elaborate techniques, combining the appropriate colors to obtain the desired shades.

Next stage, the task is sited in the skillful hands of the tailors, individually dedicated to a single step of garment creation, considering both the style of the collection and the clients’ requirements, as always the key incentive of our business.

The suits are cut and basted by hand to precisely enhance each detail; any other means would be incredible since the aim is to achieve the excellence.

The Kiton suit is a perfect blend of exclusive elements: the fabrics, the workmanship and the accessories which merge into a single item. It is the result of that passion for beauty and that Ciro Paone has always sought. The Kiton masterpieces are an expression of the art and the traditions of the ancient Neapolitan tailoring school, without any quirky "excesses", firmly established internationally as icons of class and style.

Italian Clothing | Salt Lake City, Utah

Wear it like the Italians

There are many discussions about Italian dressing styles depending on different areas, various cuts and tailors, kinds of collars and shoulder pads etc. In short, fitting is everything!

Here are some measurements that you could check if you wear a suitable suit. Firstly, you could see if the shoulder line is on your shoulder, and it must be straight, not too wide or too narrow.

Secondly, you could check the length of the suit. If you stand with two arms hanging on both sides, the bottom of suit must cover half of hip, or reach the position of your thumb. Also, it’s proper that your sleeve length touches your jaws of death. In principle, make sure your upper and lower part of body is same-size ratio.

Finally, if you wear loose pants, remember to expose your heel (full break). On the other hand, if you wear tight pants which are more trending, it’s highly recommended to see your pants touch the upper rim of your shoes. By the way, don’t let your pants crease at all.

Italian people are confident on choosing opulent colors such as salmon pink, navy blue, and coral red. However, they will use black or white dress shirts to match and balance them. If you are not comfortable with wearing too colorful suit, you may begin from some accessories like tie, pocket square, and belt.

European gorgeous palace style and paisley totem are commonly occurred on Italy streets. They can create classic, elegant, and steady feeling. In general, those patterns are printed on pocket squares, scarfs, and ties, as embellishments. Though, sometimes Italians wear suit that is full of totem, and pair with plain items to exaggerate the splendid and attractive character.

Loafers are derived from Indians moccasin, and now they are Italians favorite. Its image combines preppy style and upper class which shows fashion and casual tastes. When Italians want to put casual feeling into suits, they usually wear loafers with rolled bottom of pants, and expose their ankles or colorful socks.

The devil is in the details. To Italians, pocket squares are indispensable decorations. There are many ways to fold your pocket squares; each way can create different looks. Also, the color of pocket squares could balance the tone of suits. We have to acknowledge that pocket squares add the crowning touch to the fashion model.

Besides some existing trends, the most important thing we need to learn from Italians is their experimental spirits. They are brave in breaking rules and internalize fashion into their normal life. It’s a largest challenge for people who want to be Italian stylish guys.

When people think about high-end, hand tailored suits, Canali usually is the first thing that comes to their mind. We are so excited to add their wonderful merchandise to our store.

Don't know much about this wonderful Italian Brand? Let's introduce you to them.

In 1934,[1] Canali was founded, by Giacomo Canali[7] and Giovanni Canali,[8] in Italy as a family-run business.[9]

In the 1950s, the ownership of Canali passes on to the second generation of the family. They strengthen the house’s presence in a burgeoning Italian fashion market, which is beginning to make waves internationally.

In the 1970s, Canali was the first Italian tailor to introduce mechanised cutting machines.

According to Canali.com, in the 1990's, following the successful launch of the accessories collections, Canali consolidates its achievements by opening its first flagship boutique in Milan.

In 2010, New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera was a spokesmodel for a Canali advertisement campaign.

As of June 2013, led by the third generation of the family, Canali employs 1,700 people in seven factories in Italy, where it makes about 250,000 individual pieces of clothing annually.

In 2012 87.5% of the total production is exported outside of Italy, 1,400 suits are manufactured daily, with 1,600 pairs of trousers made daily.

Canali was a no brainer for us to bring into our store. With great detail to handwork, beautiful craftsmanship and wonderful fabrics, we are excited to add them to our Salt Lake Citycollection. We will be carrying a full line of their products - suits, sportcoats, outerwear, shirts and ties. Paired with our tailor to put the final touches, you're in for a treat! Stay posted to find our more about when we will be holding our launch party.

Robert Talbott | Salt Lake City, Utah

Robert Talbott is a classic American brand that Utah Woolen Mills in Salt Lake City, Utah has been proud to carry for years.  In 1950, following a siren call westward like many East Coast cosmopolites before them, Robert and Audrey Talbott and their young son, Robb, arrived in Carmel, California. They brought with them a deep-rooted sense of tradition and value, an appreciation of craft, and perhaps most importantly, an innate understanding of and dedication to quality.

Audrey Talbott enjoyed sewing one-of-a-kind bowties for her husband, family, and friends. Together, Robert and Audrey began to develop an array of exceptionally fine neckwear for what was initially a small, but steadily growing group of discerning customers. Step by step, Audrey and Robert’s business grew and evolved, and by 1955, the Talbotts were traveling throughout the world, commissioning the finest silk mills in Europe and Asia to produce their original designs. By the 1960s, the Robert Talbott business received national acclaim for superior quality and sophisticated design, and still today is lauded for its exquisite, Monterey-and-Italian-made clothing.

Utah Woolen Mills is proud to bring Salt Lake City the best  hand-made ties in both 3-fold and 7-fold makes.  Come to our sore, located on the north end of City Creek, and enjoy our private parking lot and enormous selection of beautiful Robert Talbott ties!

Custom Oxxford Suit in Salt Lake City

From Oxxford Clothes of Chicago, the phrase is given in latin, "Semper Servans Normam," or "Always keeping to the norm." Since 1916, they have stayed true to that cadence. Year after year they have produced the highest quality goods, never compromising for profit or trends. Harvesting the highest craftsmanship and only utilizing the best of fabrics and materials, their products are impeccable. Now, as one of the few world-wide to make completely hand-made garments, they stand almost alone in U.S.

Our selection here at Utah Woolen Mills of Oxxford custom suits and sport coats is vast. We offer a range of seasonally unique products, including their luxury and lightweight fabrics. Your selection can vary between their wools, silks, cashmeres and tweeds, giving the variety any real wardrobe needs.

As a uniquely American product, Oxxford custom suits have been worn by very distinguished men. Walt Disney, Cary Grant, and Clark Gable are just a few who have enjoyed the great pleasure of being clothed in their bespoke suits. The brand has often be the outfitter to U.S. presidents throughout their long history.

Where quality has never been questioned, and their legacy is here to stay, it is no surprise to hear Oxxford render their motto as, "always be faithful to quality."

Isaia Ties

Ties are very popular here at Utah Woolen Mills and we have a lot of them. Some of the newest ties we have in the store though are from Isaia, a high end Italian company. If you’ve been read our blog before, you’ve probably heard a little about how Isaia likes to go above and beyond when it comes to quality in style in their suits and shirts - their ties are no different.

Ties have a long history, and have changed a lot throughout the years. Some of the earliest origins of the tie are a cravat, which was worn by the mercenaries of Croatia in the 17th Century. Over time this simple piece of fabric worn around the neck began to symbolize professionalism, style, and individuality.

Most of us wear ties quiet frequently, and are always on the hunt for one that is both comfortable and stylish. Isaiah offers just that. They have a great collection of a particular tie called a 7-fold. Seven fold ties are made from one big piece of fabric that is folded over (you guessed it) seven times. This type of tie was actually extremely common a few decades ago, but during World War Two the government began rationing fabric, and a tie with less fabric was produced. This simpler tie eventually became the norm, and since it was cheaper to make, most companies stuck with this less expensive model. Isaiah knows never to compromise with quality, and have stuck with the original seven fold tie model to this day. While all this might sound great, you might still be asking, “What makes a seven fold tie so great?” They have a heavier weight due to the greater amount of fabric within the tie, causing it to rest firm and straight off of your neck. The large amount of fabric also helps give it a fuller knot.

So while we may have a lot of great ties, we are excited to carry even more with the introduction of the Isaia ties in our store. We know that when you stop by and try them on, you’ll be excited too.

The Importance of How You Dress

 By: Mitchell L. Hope

The Importance of How You Dress
With today’s high unemployment rate, low wages and high living costs, finding that much desired success is difficult to come by. Even those that have spent large amounts of money and multiple years of their life in higher education are hard pressed to find jobs and begin to lay claim to their portion of success. “53.6 percent, of bachelor's degree-holders under the age of 25 last year were jobless or underemployed, the highest share in at least 11 years.” (Yen 1). Now you must first understand that there is no flawless equation to success, and there are also many variables in obtaining it. However, whether you acknowledge it or not, the way you dress is a great way to boost your success in life.
Regardless of what role you currently play in life, a poor college student, a stay-at-home mom, a middle-age dentist, or someone in the process of figuring it out, you are looking to either find and/or further your success. Many people in their search to find it focus on most of the right ingredients: Intelligence, ambition, carisma, etc. How you dress, however, is all too often overlooked.
Let me clarify one thing before I get written off as vain and judgmental. Judging someone based solely on what they wear is wrong and is not a true indicator of who someone really is. There are many stereotypes out there that cause people to automatically think of someone in a way that doesn’t fit their real character. Again, I believe that is wrong. We should never judge unjustly, but does it happen? Yes, it happens every day. In his book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, Malcolm Gladwell explains that  prejudice can operate at an intuitive unconscious level, even in individuals whose conscious attitudes are not prejudiced.(Gladwell 13)
Although it may be wrong, stereotypes exist and many people believe them. Most, if not all, people fall into the trap of hasty judgement, myself included. Why do you think that is? Consider this experiment done by psychologists at the University of Kansas and Wellesley College.
In a study of nearly 300 undergraduate students, 63 were shown photographs of shoes that belonged to the remaining volunteers, all of whom had filled out a survey about their personality traits. Scientists found that participants deduced the age, gender, income level, and agreeableness of others based on footwear alone, according to the article published in the Journal of Research in Personality. (Henderson 1).
There is almost always a little bit of truth behind what you wear. That’s not to say that someone can deduce your entire character based on the clothes you put on that morning but there are a few details of your personality and character that are hidden in your attire. When you meet someone for the first time they make judgements based on what you are wearing. A certain percentage of that judgement is true, but the incorrect percentage of what people judge you to be based on your clothes can either be your downfall or you can use it to your advantage to get people to think of you the way you want them to.
In my personal experience as a style consultant to over 100 different men who have ranged from high school and college students to doctors, lawyers and everything in between, I have seen dress play a huge role in someone’s success. It is something that has much more of an impact than most people recognize. Dress can be the difference between getting the job and not even getting an interview for the job. A suit, for example, can make ten times the impact that a pair of jeans and a t-shirt can make. Bobbi Schwartz, a well-respected wardrobe consultant said,
Quite simply, dressing for success makes a statement to the world that you have arrived, that you are a person of consequence who needs to be taken seriously. The flip side to this is that colleagues and clients often immediately dismiss those individuals who dress poorly. You only get one chance to make a first impression. (Schwartz 1).
Again, judging someone based on their clothing alone is wrong, but it happens every day. I have had many clients say, “But I'm not the type of person that wears suits. Wouldn't that be a total lie for me to wear a suit to a job interview when I would never normally wear a suit?” The thing is, you're not lying to someone or misrepresenting yourself by wearing something that you would never typically wear. It's not about lying to a specific individual to trick them into giving you something you don't deserve, instead it's tricking their subconscious judgemental side so that they don't unfairly deny you something that you do deserve.
The idea of dressing the part isn’t just for jobs. If used correctly your clothes can take you far and help you find success in many different aspects of life. It can even help boost your own feelings about yourself. You may have noticed that most people tend to dress the way they feel at that moment. If you are feeling down and gloomy chances are good that you are going to throw on a pair of sweats and stay inside. On the other hand, if you have been asked to interview for your dream job or you are expecting to bump into a romantic interest we can all assume that you are going to dress your best. Now imagine that on a gloomy day you decide to take time to dress nice, automatically your attitude for that day improves. When you dress nicely your confidence grows. Instead of letting how you feel determine the way you dress, take charge and dress yourself to match the way you want to feel. "It's called apparel or clothing therapy," explains Michael Cunningham, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychology at the University of Louisville. "If you look a certain way, you'll think a certain way, and then you'll act a certain way." (Jordan 1). To further the point, why do people take so much time to get ready for a date? It’s because they want to make a good impression. But then, shouldn’t we always strive to make a good impression? When someone dresses carelessly for the day it reflects an attitude of carelessness for that day. When someone decides that each day is a day to dress for the occasion it reflects an attitude of self-worth and a drive to make each day worthwhile.
Either consciously or unconsciously, people notice if you have taken the time to dress well, and it can positively affect what they think of you and what you say. You can boost nearly anyone’s opinion of you just by knowing what to wear. Dressing well, however, isn’t always the easiest thing to do. “The secret to dressing a little better is simply this: You have to want to. If you don’t, it’s just not going to be a part of your life. And that’s not a terrible thing. Style is a gentle act of will.” (Esquire 16). But take heart- the fact is that you can put even the plainest man in a nice suit and he will unconsciously try and live up to it.
Professional dress doesn’t have to be drab and boring either. A suit can be tailored in literally thousands of different styles that all say different things about the wearer. Personality can still be shown in professional attire. A slimmer lapel and tie shows a younger more “hip” personality versus a wider lapel and a wide tie show a more serious traditional personality. Even little things such as a different color button hole or overlapping “kissing” buttons on a sleeve express someone who pays attention to detail. GQ explains how simply wearing cufflinks shows a unique personality.
By the late 1900's, French cuff dress shirts were in the minority, replaced by the more cost-effective and understated button-cuff casual button-up. But the style wasn't completely removed from public consciousness as those that continued to sport cufflinks, did so proudly, instantly signifying a man of stature and importance. Nowadays, as formal attire is back on the upswing, cufflinks are experiencing a bit of a comeback, allowing men to show off a bit of attitude without becoming tacky. (Gallagher 1).
Suits are just one example of how you can use dress to impact those around you. But in nearly every situation you find yourself, the right clothes can help you to stand out and be given a chance to be heard. Schwartz also explains that, “ this has become a growing concern among companies in every business category. It applies to all of us who would like to be taken seriously at work. Moreover, do not assume you are exempt if every day is "casual Friday" in your workplace. Every work environment calls for certain sartorial standards.” (Schwartz 1).
Success in life can be interpreted in many different ways depending on who you ask.. It can be monetary, occupational, social, or personal. But we are all searching for our own success in this life. Remember, life is full of first impressions and the way you dress is the first step in making a really good first, second, and constant impression on those around you. If you want to get a job, dress like you want it. If you want to get good recommendations from your college professors, don’t go to class wearing a tanktop and gym shorts. Make every impression count. Look your best, and you’ll be your best.

Isaia Shirts: Made by Hand

As the summer comes to a close and the weather grows cold, one phrase refreshes from our minds; cold weather is coming! And with the change of colors in the leaves also comes the time to update our outfits.  Last week we talked a little about what makes Isaiah suits so different. If you haven't come by to see for yourself we strongly recommend you do. This week it's their shirts that are the topic of discussion.

Much like ties, shoes, and socks, you can never have enough shirts.  Designers around the world are always thinking of creative ways to create colors and patters to keep people always looking stylish and unique. Isaiah is no different. Like we mentioned with suits last week, Isaiah has their own textile designer who creates exclusive fabric patters for their shirts. This way you can know that the shirts you get are individual - like you.

Each Isaiah shirt, from the button hole to the sleeves, is sewn by hand to give it more flexibility during movement while keeping a trim body-forming fit. The armholes are sewn onto the body of the shirt, bit pitched forward, to give you more comfort in the shoulders as well. The buttons are hand carved mother-of-pearl, giving them a glossy finish that will never fade. One of our favorite features of the shirt might be one of the biggest reasons you have to see them for yourself, because it's hard to believe it until you see it with your own eyes. The patters on the collar follow through to match with the pattern on the shirt. For example. If you are wearing one of their striped shirts then the striped on the collar will match exactly the stripes on the shirt.

There is something to be said about wearing a piece of clothing that was totally made by hand. The button holes alone on an Isaia shirt take over 3 hours per shirt to complete. The ease of movement is unmatched. This is the season for handmade goods.
